Sabbath Devotional :: Eclipsed Expectations
This month, I joined millions of Americans in an effort to encounter the celestial: watching the total solar eclipse. The experience wasn’t what I expected; it was beautiful, but I couldn’t help feeling FOMO (fear of missing out), disappointed that it had been better for other people at other locations. This ambivalence can characterize many of our heavenly encounters. With the renewed emphasis on the temple at General Conference, how we can approach our interactions with the heavens with an eye towards gratitude, grace, and God? I missed the 2017 eclipse, but that increased my desire to see this one. Plotting maps years ago, Austin, Texas looked like a good…

Sabbath Devotional :: His Grace Is Sufficient (Even When We Are Not)
This fall, our stake leaders made a great effort to prepare members to receive personal revelation at the upcoming stake conference. A member of the Seventy would be presiding at the conference, and he had recommended four general conference talks for us to study beforehand. Stake members received these talks in advance on a Sunday when high councilors spoke in sacrament meetings about the blessings of attending stake conference. Wards reached out to help organize babysitting so parents could attend the Saturday evening session. Sabbath Devotional :: Grace
Growing up LDS in the mid-seventies and eighties, I don’t remember hearing much about grace at church. The band (a band!), complete with bass guitar and drums, sang of grace like the rockstar doctrine it is. At the time, the spiritual concept of grace sounded about as foreign to me as the “ch-chch-ch, chch-ch, chch-ch — ting” of sticks against cymbals in church. It stands to reason that, for a time, the Church neglected grace. The concept of unconditional love and forgiveness seemed almost too…

Sabbath Devotional :: Advent: Of Grace Notes and Glory
I’ve had a busy week. Household chores were taxing and unrelenting. Juggling our families’ schedules for upcoming Christmas visits seemed as complex as prepping for the Olympics. Mountains of recycling needed to be schlepped over to the center — cardboard, paper, glass, plastic, metal — heavy, unwieldy and smelly. The mail offered bills and stacks of catalogs we didn’t need from mostly unlikely sources (Cigar connoisseur? Horse & Saddle?) What probably bugged me the most was the sudden dysfunction of my car’s Sirius XM radio. How could I keep up with our chaotic government without the news informing me mile after out-of-signal mile? Despite my frequent efforts to tune the…
