We Are Witnesses
On Wednesday, June 3, 2020, MWEG hosted its inaugural Town Hall: “If All Lives Matter, then Black Lives Matter: Turning Frustration into Productive Interpersonal Action.” After inspiring words by featured presenter Dr. LaShawn Williams, MWEG’s anti-racism committee lead, Charlotte Mountain, shared these thoughts. “One witness shall not rise up against a man for any iniquity, or for any sin, in any sin that he sinneth: at the mouth of two witnesses, or at the mouth of three witnesses, shall the matter be established” (Deuteronomy 19:15). What this is telling us is that it is righteous and good that there be corroboration to any prosecution. We should not be convicted on…

MWEG on the Hill
The women of MWEG come from across the political spectrum and are united in their commitment to peacemaking and to boldly calling for elected leaders to govern with integrity. Here are excerpts of letters written by our some of our members to their members of Congress:

MWEG Members in the News
MWEG members all across the United States are writing some fabulous op-eds and letters to the editor about impeachment! Here is a selection of those pieces, with many more to come. Christie Black :: Arizona Capitol Times “Since when is ethical government a partisan issue? Is it only a concern when it is an offense from the opposing party? I have followed the impeachment inquiry and the report released this week. The evidence that the president abused his power and then obstructed the inquiry is incredibly compelling. The inquiry did not consist of slanted evidence with hyper-partisan witnesses. The witnesses were people of character, dedicated to their country.” Alicia Crowley…

Why I Am Paying Attention
I’ll be honest — I haven’t always paid attention to what was happening in the world. There was a time when I didn’t care much about what was happening in politics or on the news. I was focused on my own life. What was happening in the White House or on the five o’clock news didn’t seem to affect me very much. There was a time when I would use the same excuses I hear many people using today: The news is too negative. Politics are a joke. The media is a mess. There’s nothing I can do to change any of it, anyway. I don’t have time for any…

A Visit to Our Congressman
On Friday, October 11, Traci Paice and I made a quick visit to Congressman Ken Buck’s office in Greeley, Colorado. A few days earlier, Traci had sent Congressman Buck an email expressing support for the impeachment inquiry, and she got a response wherein he claimed Speaker Pelosi “lacks the power to initiate such an inquiry on her own.” He said the House must pass a resolution. Concerned with this response, Traci posted his letter in the comments of an MWEG Discussion Group post about the White House’s intent to not cooperate with the impeachment inquiry. Because Congressman Buck is also my representative, her comment caught my eye, so I copied…

‘Sasse Leads the Way’
By being one of the first of his party to push back against the president’s suggestions for Ukraine and China to investigate Joe Biden and his son, Sasse bravely marked a path, one that we hope more Republican senators and representatives will pursue as elections draw closer.

MWEG Members in Action
Hot on the heels of the 68th United Nations Civil Society Conference and with voter registration in full swing, MWEGers have been busy keeping up with current political events, while doing their part to engage in civil discourse online and in person. Members were called to action regarding the lowering of refugee resettlement to an all-time low of 18,000 by the current administration, along with a call to contact their representatives to make the full copy of the whistleblower complaint available to the House and Senate Intelligence Committees (the complaint was released to the public on September 26). These calls to action keep our representatives accountable to their constituents and…

My Top 10 Takeaways from the UN Civil Society Conference
In his 2018 BYU commencement address, Elder Jeffrey R. Holland said, “So go out there and light a candle. Be a ray of light. Be your best self and let your character shine. Cherish the gospel of Jesus Christ and live it. The world needs you, and surely your Father in Heaven needs you if His blessed purposes for His children are to prevail. You have entered to learn. Now go forth to serve and strengthen. If correcting all the world’s ills seems a daunting task, so be it. Go out there and be undaunted.” Be a ray of light. The world needs you.Go out there and be undaunted. The 68th…

Peacemaking on Social Media
When we enter a conversation online with the intent to try and force a change of opinion, we elicit defensiveness and frustration. But when we bring a peacemaking mindset to these interactions, we offer posts and comments that are authentic, edifying, and praiseworthy. As MWEG members have learned about the Six Principles of Peacemaking and practiced using them in our Facebook discussion group, they have been inspired to apply them in their personal social media use as well. Here are a few examples: “I have a friend who recently started sharing a lot more unkind memes about politics, ones that say ‘How dumb are you if you believe xyz??’ or…

How MWEG Members Engage
Throughout the year members of Mormon Women for Ethical Government (MWEG) have been engaging in proactive advocacy, attending rallies, sending emails and making phone calls to their representatives, writing op-eds to their local newspapers, and more! The women of MWEG have included their family members and friends in their efforts to serve in their communities. No matter how big or small the contribution, our members are doing magnificent work. Take a look at some of your successes from the spring and summer: Many of you have been gathering with members of your state chapters and building relationships with state and federal representatives. For example, members of the Nebraska chapter met…
