Are You Aware? News from the Heartland
This is part IV in our “Rural America” Awareness Wednesday series. Read the other posts in the series here. It is almost a golden rule of campaign journalism: Find a small-town restaurant packed with white conservative voters, and ask what their hopes are for America. The restaurant patrons enthusiastically support the Republican candidate and bemoan the direction of our country and her values. After the pancakes are eaten and the coffee cups drained, the intrepid reporter books it back to the big city. We watched this scenario play out in the election of 2016, where a majority of rural Americans voted for Trump, many of them expressing the thought that big…

Are You Aware? Coming to an Understanding
This is part I in our Awareness Wednesday series on disability. Read the other posts in the series here. A few weeks ago my son returned from his mission in Argentina due to the coronavirus. While he waits for reassignment, we have enjoyed having him home and hearing about his experiences. He was in Argentina for six months. It was just enough time to learn Spanish and become moderately fluent. He spoke about how homesick he was throughout those first weeks and months. It was incredibly hard to not understand the language. He is a smart kid who is very gifted with words. The inability to share his thoughts and participate…

Sabbath Devotional :: Mighty Prayer
A group of disciples had stopped on the side of a road. The work of teaching the Gospel of Jesus Christ was just beginning. There was so much to do, an abundance of knowledge to gain, and many many miles to go before their journeys would end. Their work would span throughout their mortal life and carry on through the eternities. Gathered in a circle, these faithful disciples united in prayer. The scriptures tell us it was a “mighty prayer” (3 Nephi 27:1). Their prayers were full of humility and sincerity of heart (D&C 5:24). Their faithful offering, individually and collectively, brought our Savior, Jesus Christ, before them asking them,…

Awareness Wednesday :: Xenophobia, Part I — Compassionate Eyes
“But he, willing to justify himself, said unto Jesus, And who is my neighbor? And Jesus answering said, A certain man went down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and fell among thieves…” (Luke 10: 29–30). What follows is a beautiful and compelling parable. A Jewish man, robbed and beaten, his bloody and broken body left helplessly on the side of the road. Two men pass him, actually crossing the road to avoid close contact with the destitute figure. A certain Samaritan notices the injured Jew, and he stops. Two men look at one another. One broken, one whole. Two men trained and taught to despise each other and everything they represent —…

Awareness Wednesday :: Service With Intent
How can we serve with the intent to heal? When we serve, what is our focus? Is it to check off a holiday goal? Is it to feel the spirit of giving? Is it planned with the intent to heal? What does service with the intent to heal look like?

Awareness Wednesday :: Unintended Consequences — Ban the Box
It is no secret that an individual with a criminal background will struggle to find employment. It goes without saying that the majority of employers do not want to hire ex-convicts. Learning that a future employee once attempted murder, committed a string of robberies, or even sold drugs is an unsettling feeling for any employer. The stigma of a conviction and time served is not an easy obstacle to overcome. In order to lower the barriers faced by those who have been convicted of a crime to being offered a job, fair-chance policies or “ban the box” laws have been introduced. Ban the box is legislation that restricts employers from…

Sabbath Devotional :: Discernment
My third child has an artist’s soul. Her world is full of color, music, and words. She lives to create; it is her passion. Her fingers and mind are in constant motion. This consuming need to create also has led to a great deal of frustration when projects fail to meet her high standards and vision. I can only imagine her levels of stress as a young girl, working on her masterpieces with inexperienced fingers, unable to perform as she desired. Tears, many tears, were a constant in our home as she struggled, learning to be patient. One evening as I was fixing dinner, she came to me with her…
